Memorial Walk for the Trees
Wednesday, August 5, 2026
6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Join us for a quiet evening of remembrance as we honor the trees lost during the July 11 microburst and reflect on what they meant to our neighborhoods, our city, and this shared landscape.
As an active cemetery, The Woodlands has witnessed countless funerals over nearly two centuries, including memorials for some of our oldest living monuments: our trees.
Nearly a decade ago, we gathered to say goodbye to the last remaining English Elm grove in the country with a funeral for the Grove of Seven Giants. Now, we invite our neighbors who are mourning the loss of the hundreds of trees that fell during the microburst last month to come together in remembrance.
Where: 4000 Woodland Avenue, Philadelphia, PA
When: Wednesday, August 5, 2026, 6:00–7:00 p.m.
We’ll meet at the front gates of The Woodlands Cemetery at 6:00 pm. Take a reflective walk through The Woodlands' 1,000+ tree canopy, where you'll visit towering State Champion Trees, recently planted saplings, and the remaining snags of the Grove of Seven Giants. Along the way, you're invited to participate in a simple, optional grief ritual to honor the trees we've lost and the vital role they played in our community.
Whether you come to grieve, reflect, or spend time alone among the trees that remain, all are welcome.
Registration appreciated—registered attendees will receive updates, including weather adjustments.
