HELP SUPPORT A SPACE YOU LOVE

The Woodlands relies on Volunteers to keep the grounds beautiful, ensure our programming runs smoothly, and increase our impact within our communities. Are you looking for a different way to experience West Philadelphia? Do you enjoy the green oasis inside our gates? Want to give back to your community and meet new people? We’re glad you’re considering a volunteer role at The Woodlands!

Help us fulfill our mission

The Woodlands’ mission is to enrich the lives of area residents and visitors by serving as a hub for activities and educational programs that interpret, celebrate, and make available to the public our historic buildings and tranquil green space.

We rely on volunteers for everything from cleaning up the site to leading house tours, from gardening to helping us make sure our events run smoothly. Whatever your skills might be, we'd welcome you to consider our volunteer team.

By becoming a Volunteer at The Woodlands, you will:

  • Help a small nonprofit and historic landmark in the heart of West Philadelphia

  • Connect with other community members who are passionate about The Woodlands

  • Gain in-depth knowledge about one of the United States’ most influential historic sites

  • Spend time within one of Philadelphia's most beautiful spaces

What volunteer opportunities are available?

Check out the various volunteer opportunities by expanding the list below. Please note: some roles are seasonal, some roles require additional training, and others may have a max capacity for volunteers.

  • Site clean-up at The Woodlands tackles hands-on projects across the grounds. Volunteers can help during organized group work days or independently. Work days occur on weekends October - March and on weekday evenings April - September. Clean-up tasks may include but are not limited to clearing cemetery sections of debris, picking up trash, removing ivy from trees, light cleaning at the Mansion or Stable, gardening/weeding projects, and running path maintenance projects.

  • Assist The Woodlands Facilities and Landscape Manager with new tree planting, watering young trees, light pruning, and clearing cemetery sections of fallen tree limbs. New trees are planted in the Spring and Fall, but keeping young trees healthy and thriving is a year-round commitment!

  • At public programs and community events you’ll help with set-up and breakdown, welcome visitors, assist with parking and way-finding, and be available to answer questions from visitors about The Woodlands.

  • Private events at The Woodlands range from corporate meetings and conferences, to celebrations of life and weddings. Volunteers will help oversee the historic Hamilton Mansion and landscape during events, and represent The Woodlands during someone’s special event.

  • Did you know that a staff of 4 people manage the whole Woodlands Trust and Cemetery? As office support you’ll help our small team with data entry, organization projects, historical research and more.

  • As fundraising support you’ll assist The Woodlands Staff with researching grant opportunities, fundraising campaigns, and more.

  • As a tour guide, you'll delve into the mystery of William Hamilton, stories of the people who lived and worked on the 18th Century Estate, horticultural history, architectural history, and Victorian-era cemeteries.

Please note: Guide candidates must attend guide-training workshops. Workshop dates and details are to be determined.

  • The Woodlands Grave Gardeners adopt cradle graves, which they plant with Victorian-era plants and care for throughout the gardening season. This program has a limited application window in January of each year. Please note: this is not the place to apply for The Woodlands Grave Gardener Program. We try to include as many volunteers as possible, however, due to the overwhelming popularity of the program we have to limit the group to 150.
