WHO we are
STAFF, BOARD & COMMUNITY PARTNERS
Open daily from dawn to dusk for the enjoyment of the public, The Woodlands is a tranquil open green space in the heart of University City. Thanks to a small staff, a dedicated Board of Directors, our Community Partners, and Work Study students, and we are able to ensure that The Woodlands is a space for the celebration of life, love, nature, family, and history.

Jessica Baumert (she/her) is the Executive Director of The Woodlands National Historic Landmark District in Philadelphia, PA. She has a degree in Historic Preservation from The Savannah College of Art and Design and fell in love with historic cemeteries while learning to repair aging headstones in Savannah's historic Colonial Park Cemetery. Jessica followed her love of preservation to the City of Philadelphia, where she spent ten years caring for the historic structures of Fairmount Park. In 2011 she took the helm at The Woodlands and began bringing a place for the dead back to life. Since then, she has developed nationally renowned programs including the Grave Gardeners, increased annual visitorship to over 100,000 people, and cultivated a renewed sense of community within a horticultural oasis in West Philadelphia. She currently lives in West with her partner Nate, Cat Gene, and Puppy Peter.

Work Study Students
The Woodlands offers annual work study opportunities. If you have a question for a current work study student, or if you are interested in learning about future opportunities, please email intern@woodlandsphila.org.
Bankston Creech (he/him, she/her) is a graduate student working towards a Master’s in Public History at Rutgers and a Work Study Intern at The Woodlands. I wanted to introduce myself, and to wish everyone a happy start to the summer season! My name is Bankston Creech, and I will be interning here at The Woodlands this summer. I am a graduate student working towards a Masters in Public History at Rutgers University, as well as an avid knitter and Gothic novel reader. In the next few months I am excited to be helping the cemetery staff with a project celebrating the Grave Gardeners.
Falere Fagoroye (she/her) is a current student at the University of Pennsylvania in the Master’s of Historic Preservation program with a focus on Public History and the Built Environment. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 2019, where she earned a bachelor's degree in architectural studies. She is interested in combining her passions for art, materials conservation, historic site management, and interpretation and exhibition planning in the preservation field. During the summer of 2025, she visited The Woodlands for a workday as part of her master’s program and was immediately drawn to hands-on conservation as a supplement to her public history concentration.
Gabrielle Lynch (she/her) is a current student at the University of Pennsylvania in the Master’s of Historic Preservation program with a focus on Architectural Conservation. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2022, where she earned a bachelor's degree in biological anthropology, communications, and museum studies. She is passionate about material conservation and its scientific processes, and combining these interests with the preservation of community spaces. In the summer of 2025, Gabrielle visited The Woodlands with her classmates to restore headstones. She was fascinated not only by the processes behind resetting the stone but also by what The Woodlands represents to the surrounding community.
